My only comment is I have learned I can't fix things... God can and God has helped me change as well as getting older. One other thing... You will remember the hurts but you have to get over them and move on. Marriage is an act of changing and letting God change you. Don't pray for God to change your mate until you ask Him to show you what you might need to change.

Well, that kind of love is not limited to marriage so I would have to say yes. However, intimacy brings more and more choices in a deep relationship like marriage so I think that it would grow deeper every time you choose to love anyway, or forgive, or compromise, or 'get over it,' or come back and try again.

The only thing I am not factoring in is how hard our hearts can get when we've been hurt a great many times; or when we choose to love and love and the other party chooses to take and take. Then I am reminded of William Butler Yeats poem, Easter 1916 where he writes, "Too long a sacrifice makes a stone of the heart." Then it's up to God to miraculously enfold us in His love so we can choose to love again.

I think we are always tested in our love, D, in and out of marriage, because we think we understand it and it is so central to our lives. The Spirit really wants us to get it right.

Question.... is it possible to love someone to that extent before you are married? Or @ least to know for sure before life test your relationship? Or is this the kind of love that grows deeper each time you chose?

The "country songs" line cracked me up! :) Good post.

Other good books on the subject are "He", "She", and "We" (three separate books, each fairly slim) by Robert A. Johnson. Johnson is a Jungian scholar and uses mythology as his foil: "He" looks at Parsifal's quest for the Grail, while "She" uses the story of Eros and Psyche. "We" examines Tristan and Iseult.

God certainly wants more of us than we allow him. The problem with that is we are absoltely cheating ourselves. I get tired of all the church activites and often want to rebel... that's me, rebel to the death (private joke). But, a day does not go by that I don't have communication with God. It's not always good, but, I pause and do listen for what my Father has to say and I don't always like. I agree with one of the responses. I think few people get it... that is an honest relationship with our Father. A relationship is ongoing and from the heart. He is a jealous God. I, also have jealous tendencies. I don't get to spend all the time I would like with my son. I love to talk with him, argue with him, love him and hug him... That's what God wants for us... to love him, trust Him, Faith Him, Walk with Him and Live for Him. I love you Father and I love my son.
